Conversations : Sharon the dog mom.

A Mother and her gay dog named after a Star Wars character.png

We walked out of Chuck’s Produce & Street Market, which is a wonderful grocery that has a good selection of food, and an even better selection of vegetarian sandwiches and pizza in their hot deli. So anyway, we walked out, and two things happened:

THE TWO THINGS THAT HAPPENED OUTSIDE CHUCK’S

#1 : Mother with Dog

A woman in her 60s had a dog. During a prolonged conversation with the former, I bulletpoint-gleaned the following:

  • He is a boy. He is named after a Star Wars character, although in the interests of canine anonymity I will not disclose which. He identifies as a Bedlington Terrier. “…his grandmother was a Westminster,” Mother explains.

  • Contrary to what genetic history suggests, he does not deal with hip dysplasia. Which is common. So it’s great that he doesn’t. Probably the distinguished line of strong hips he was born into.

  • Mr. Kenobi is 14 years old and has been with Mother for all those, save the first ten weeks.

  • The most intriguing tidbit she shared with me, conspiratorially, taking a break from outlining his royal lineage and pedigree, was to let me know that he is gay. I possess no salacious details of his sex life, but she assured me that he is extremely interested in other male canines.

  • She is heavily involved in dog shows, or was at one point. I am a little hazy on the chronology or involvement of that, and whether Mr —- is a part of that world currently or not. I think not, but based on the conversation I had with Mother, it is certain that he would win every show he was in.

#2 : Because it’s there, and it might be different some day

“Why are you taking a picture of Chuck’s?”
my son asked.

“Because,”
I said,
”I don’t know how things will change over time. And this is a record of this on this one day and how it existed in its present state.”
