Stories & SNippets : 2006

…and observations, journals, & musings on music, film, books, art, and pretty things. and life in general.

January 2006

January 2

Wire - The First Letter. Always think of my friend Brian Massman from the last couple years of grad school, and the great music convos we had.

January 5

Sade, Spoon, Sunny Day Real Estate. The latter makes me think of my cousin Bobby. I somehow remember him talking about them many years ago, although I’m not sure he’s a big fan now. Or maybe he is.

January 9

Cat Power.

January 11

The Streets.

January 14

Visitors! Our concrete-floored, two-bedroom is filled with love, an uncomfortable futon, and enough space to host my parents and a 13- and 9-year old with backs and bodies not yet aching. Love having them here for the weekend. Nine hours, each way, to hang with us. Incredible.

January 18 Selfies with duckies.

Autechre - Amber (1994)
Brian Eno - Ambient 1 Music (1978)
Prodigy - Always Outnumbered…(2004)
Scooter

January 23

Eels, Blonde Redhead, Dressy Bessy. The latter introduced by Becca’s friend’s friend who became my friend, Jeff.

January 24

Alkaline Trio, Spoon, Sleater-Kinney. The former brings to mind Willy, an old student of mine from recent grad school days, circa 2004-5, and his love of Boston-area punk.

January 25

Super Furry Animals, Alkaline Trio.

January 30

Le Tigre, Josh Northcott & the Rekoning, Twilight Singers.

February 2006

February 02

Missy Elliott - Misse E…(2001)
Papa M, Mull Historical Society

February 05

Echo & The Bunnymen.

February 06

Scissor Sisters, Stone Roses - Second Coming, Atmosphere - Seven’s Travels, Ben Kweller - Sha Sha. And three songs of Metallica’s S&M: nah. Still not sold. What happened to them after Black?

February 07

SOTD: Sea of Love - Cat Power.
Elefant, Fiery Furnaces, Ghostface Killah

February 08

Mogwai, Neko Case, Nitzer Ebb.

February 14

Wolfmother.

February 15

TV On the Radio, Lily Allen, Decemberists, Calexico.

February 18

Any Shabbat morning kicked off with Becca singing and dancing along to Patty Cabrera’s The River is a good one. She is a mischievous and talented one, that one, and she has a beautiful singing voice she doesn’t give herself enough credit for. Apologies Patty, I’m speaking of my wife.

February 26

SOTD: Lighting the Way - Superdrag.

February 28

Nick Cave, Cat Power.

March 2006

March 02

Infected Mushroom

March 07

Luna, Yo La Tengo, Tom Petty.

March 08

Infected Mushroom, Feist, Of Montreal.

March 14

Arcade Fire, Arab Strap (another Brian Massman recommendation).

March 15

Spoon, Modest Mouse, Fischerspooner, Modest Mouse, Spoon, The Knife

SOTD:
The Fitted Shirt - Spoon
Wild is the Wind - Cat Power

March 18

SOTD: Do You Believe in Love? - Huey Lewis & The News.

March 20

Bob Marley, Spoon, Robert Miles, Orbital, Autechre, Boney M, Pulp.

It’s fascinating how you can connect an artist with someone for no particular reason, or perhaps nothing more than a passing remark. I always think of my mother-in-law, Vicki, when listening to Boney M, completely due to her making a remark several years ago about liking one of their songs.

March 22

SNL “Celebrity Jeopardy” snippets. Sooo funny.

March 28

Air. One of my favorite associations is Becca talking about her listening to the French duo driving through the wheat fields between Walla Walla and Spokane and the way the sunlight moves off the gold. Love.

April 2006

May 2006

June 2006

Becca’s cousin D—- throwing down rhymes at our house. Talented kid, lots of fun.

July 2006

August 2006

September 2006

October 2006

November 2006

November 16 - Things to get for our upcoming kid in the next year:

A hatchet
A Very Long Media jumper and hat
Classical CD mix

Art tool kit and paint

December 2006

December 23

Just completed a rousing rendition of Away in a Manger. The Von Long Family.

Josh got in late last night. Burly, bearded, braided.
Jamey’s friend from Brazil is here for the holiday. She seems like a cool cat so far.

Got to hear our child’s heartbeat for the first time on Monday (Dec 18). This kid sounds so healthy, and strong, and funny, like their dad and mum. :)
