July 15 : How to receive compliments from a 4-year old
She is really into baseball. We split our time amongst chores, school, artmaking, and baseball.
She caught sight of a Facebook image I posted of her, and nodded:
“Let me see that…oh, I like it Dodi! That’s really nice!”
She has been wanting to photograph various scenes herself. Mostly flowers, rocks, grass, and dirt.
We will have her ‘friend birthday party’ soon. Thanks to our…planning, most of them will be absent (vacation, events in our social ecosystem, etc.). She is very excited (“whoo-hoo!”) to hang out with her friends and no adults, except for “…uncles and aunties.”
Listening to Django Reinhardt.
Joys: Del Taco $.49 cent bean and cheese burritos.
Our 1-year old is teething. Mama is at the top of his list. Not feeling good.
July 17
She and I were watching a video clip from 1988.
Who is that? I asked.
-Granda, she replied. But he looks different?
Different in what way? I inquired of our 4-year old.
-His nose. She said. His nose is, umm, shaped different.
Right. I said. You’re right.
And she was. He broke his nose in a completely unpreventable incident involving a nail gun left on an overhead beam falling on his face, and he had his nose rebuilt…in other words, a new, different nose. I have never spoken of this to her.

Shall we wrestle to see who gets to ride on the tire swing in Tillamook first? I asked.
Actually, she said, I would prefer to wrestle Uncle Jeremy.
Huh? I said. What?!
Yeah, she told me. I would prefer to wrestle Uncle Jeremy first, and then I can wrestle you. Does that sound like a good idea?

October 21 - a Friday
A 15-month old deftly maneuvers breakfast with a spoon. He’s decided today to be a southpaw. Uncle Jonny visits; enveloped in a pink blanket, they snuggle and play with wood blocks. Later, Countess Becca reads poetry in the car while we drive to a secret spot on the Oregon Coast. There, we are greeted warmly and provided a warm bed.

Short, high-pitched, self-aware wit. That girl of ours. Love it. Love her.
Dave Sedaris at Arlene Schnitzer. Rain dumping, racing through flashing crosswalks, trying to guide my wife’s body, hand in small of her back.
Merrygoers scurrying around, me, retaining boyish, childish romanticism: ‘Rainstorm? Lovers in the city? Pure cinema.’
