Two-part question?

1) Any Father's Day-themed film favourites or recommendations?

Frequency is definitely on my list.

2) Classic dads in cinema, television, or literature? They don't have to be heroes or even likeable. Just memorable. Like Frank from Shameless. Characters that make you think about, for better or for worse, what it means to be a dad...

Merci!

To Kill a Mockingbird. Atticus Finch remains my favorite father in literature and film. The Road, Field of Dreams. Smoke Signals. One of the films about fathers and sons that most deeply impacted me.

Thanks Raleigh! I read The Road, but have not been able to bring myself to watch the adaptation...so dark. I will, one of these days.

Smoke Signals...Sherman Alexie? Have not seen it, but saw him speak a decade ago. Somehow it slipped off my radar...thanks for getting it back on! I will definitely bump it high up my to-see list.

Melissa - good call! George is such a timeless yet archaic throwback to utopian old-school fathering 🙂 And, in my opinion, one of those rare cases where the remake is better than the original

"Hot Rod", "I am Sam"
"The courtship of Eddie's Father" I saw the T.V. series but I heard the movie was good also.

Love, love the Tenenbaums. Good call, Jonathan.

Marcus, Walter White made me think of another television father icon: Dr. Walter Bishop from Fringe. A show that deftly provided many touching moments regarding the father/son dynamic amidst explorations into the peripheries of science and parallel universes.
